The formulas and methods on this site are taken from historical manuals, newspapers and receipt books. They are published for interest and for testing, and each is attributed to its source. Where a method is tested, the result is reported honestly, including when it fails.

Historical household advice was written for different materials, different buildings and a different understanding of safety. Test anything on a small, hidden area first. Some historical ingredients (lead, arsenic, mercury and others) are genuinely dangerous. Where those appear on this site they are described as history and as warning. They are never a recommendation, and no method for using them is given.
